Workplace is an excellent place to introduce health and wellness programs.

An article in Bloomberg Business Week stated that companies such as Aetna, JPMorgan Chase, IBM, and Dell are actively trying to include family members in wellness programs. They have announced incentives for family members to participate in wellness. And it’s a good business sense.

The article also discussed a scenario where an IBM manager who found it increasingly difficult to make healthy choices at home. The company’s wellness program engaged the employee’s family by providing healthy meal plans and health tips by email.

Dependents of your employees represent approximately half of your organizations overall health care costs.

When a company introduces employee wellness programs, the entire family is educated on various aspects such as healthy eating, nutrition, easy recipes etc.

Here are some tips for organization to bring dependents into their wellness program:

Engage: If dependents are healthier then the employees are also happier. As a result, happier employees will always focus on the work. Engaging those happy employees will drive more productivity to organization.

Unique Approach: The average person receives a message seven times before they remember it. People learn in different ways, so initiating a unique approach like offering free health check-up, incentives for inviting dependents to wellness program etc. These initiatives will help you appeal to more people.

Identify health risks: Invite dependents to participate in key wellness initiatives. Based on your organization’s goals, include dependents in key offerings designed to identify health risks like inviting them to fill out a health assessment or take part in biometric screenings.
